Natalie Uy, the women's national record holder in the pole vault for the Philippines at 14-2 (4.32m) and the roommate of Olympic gold medalist Katie Nageotte, joins DyeStat editor Erik Boal to recap the women's pole vault final and her winning 16-0.75 (4.90m) clearance, as well as weightlifter Hidilyn Diaz becoming the first Filipino athlete in any event to capture Olympic gold in Tokyo. Uy, an Eastern Michigan graduate, trains in Georgia with Nageotte and Team Essx under the guidance of former American record holder Brad Walker, a 2006 World Indoor and 2007 World Outdoor gold medalist. Uy also grew up in Ohio, graduating from Fairmont High in 2013. Nageotte, who needed three attempts to clear her opening height of 14-9 (4.50m) en route to winning the title, graduated from Olmstead Falls High in 2009. Uy also reflects on Filipino pole vaulter Ernest John Obiena tying for 11th in the men's final with an 18-8.25 (5.70m) clearance. In addition, she examines the perseverance of Diaz, a four-time Olympic weightlifter who earned gold in the 55kg classification after securing silver in the 53kg group in 2016. More videos |
